Todd Szegedy Scores Second Win of the Season at Stafford

Mike Stefanik Earns 9th NASCAR Championship

STAFFORD Springs, Conn. (Oct 29, 2006) - Todd Szegedy of Ridgefield, Conn. closed out the 2006 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season with a wire-to-wire win in the Carquest Fall Final at Stafford Motor Speedway and Mike Stefanik of Coventry R.I. officially was crowned the series champion.

It was the second win of the season for Szegedy and the Wisk/Snuggle Ford race team and the 10th of his career. The victory moved Szegedy into fifth in the final point standings. Szegedy was the winner of the Bud Pole way back on Sept. 30 when he set fast time in qualifying. Inclement weather postponed the Fall Final, making it the last event of the 2006 season.

Stefanik finished the race sixth in the Diversified Metals Chevrolet. All Stefanik needed to do was start the race to assure himself of his seventh NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Championship. It was the ninth overall NASCAR championship for Stefanik placing him in a tie with Richie Evans as the all time NASCAR Championship leader.

Ken Barry was the runner-up in the race and put pressure on Szegedy in the closing laps, but fell short by .22 seconds. Zach Sylvester came all the way from the 28th starting position to finish 3rd. Defending series champion Tony Hirschman finished fourth and John Blewett, III rounded out the Top-5.

Eddie Flemke of Southington , Conn. finished ninth in the race and earned enough points to place second in the final series standings one point ahead of Ted Christopher. Christopher finished 25th completing only 50 laps because of an accident.

Reggie Ruggiero Rolls to Victory at Thompson,
Mike Stefanik Moves Closer To His Seventh Title

Thompson, Conn. (Oct 15, 2006) -- Reggie Ruggiero of Rocky Hill, Conn. drove to his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory of the season in the World Series of Auto Racing Presented by Whelen Engineering & XTRAMART at Thompson International Speedway. Ruggiero took over the top spot on lap 148 when race leader Ted Christopher and John Blewett, III tangled in Turn-3 following a restart on that lap. Ruggiero then held off Jimmy Blewett of Howell N.J. on a green-white checkered restart which extended the race distance to 160 laps.

It was the 44th career victory for Ruggiero, who drives the Atlantic Sprinkler Chevrolet, and his first since 2004 when he won at Wall Township, N.J. Ruggiero’s last win at Thompson occurred in 1998.

“Nobody seemed to want to win this race tonight, “ said Ruggiero. “I was just glad we were in a position to get it at the end.”

Christopher was credited with 19th position after the lap 148 accident, effectively ending his hopes for his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Championship. Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I. finished fifth in the race and now leads Christopher by 148 points. Stefanik needs to earn at least a last place finish in the final race of the year at Stafford Springs, Conn. on Oct. 28 to secure his seventh career title.

Stefanik overcame an off track excursion midway through the race Stefanik dropped back to 22nd place but worked his way back to the Top-5.

Eric Sanderson, who owns the Diversified Metals Chevrolet driven by Stefanik, clinched his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Owners Championship.
Finishing third was Jerry Marquis who won this race last s
eason. Last week’s winner, Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y., was fourth.

EDDIE FLEMKE HEADS TO WATERFORD IN SEARCH OF FIRST
NASCAR WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR WIN OF 2006

Waterford Speedbowl event sets stage for final two races;
supports Volunteer Firefighters

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept 19, 2006) – There are just three races remaining on the 2006 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour schedule and the series only appearance of the season at the Waterford (Conn.) Speedbowl is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 24. The Whelen VFD 150 will feature a 150 lap race at the 3/8-mile Connecticut shoreline oval for NASCAR’s oldest open wheeled Touring Series.

Eddie Flemke of Southington, Conn. heads to Waterford third in the series standings. He considers the Speedbowl to be one of his favorite race tracks.

“It’s a drivers a track,” said Flemke. “There’s plenty of room to get by someone – if you’re faster. Keeping your momentum is a key, it’s a handling track. The most important thing is to be patient”

Flemke has found success in the past at Waterford; he is a two time winner with his last victory coming in 2004.

“The track has been good to me,” said Flemke. “But you can’t get overconfident. This series is very tough. There are a lot of experienced drivers and some very talented new ones. I believe we can have a good finish but you need to have things go your way.”

Flemke is in his second year driving for car owner Gary Teto and the Red Line Oil/Ron Bouchard Auto/Premier Kitchens Chevrolet Race team. With five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes he heads to Waterford trailing Ted Christopher by 57 points and Mike Stefanik by 161 markers.

“I’m very pleased with the success we’ve had so far this year,” said Flemke. “I have a great owner and crew. When I joined this team last year I knew it had the potential. It’s nice to see that things have fallen into place the only thing we haven’t done this year is win a race. Waterford would be a great place to get that first win.”

Bud Pole Qualifying is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. and the Whelen VFD 150 is scheduled to get the green at approximately 5:15 p.m.

BLEWETT WINS  WHELEN MODIFIED TOUR NEW HAMPSHIRE 100

LOUDON, N.H. (Sept. 15, 2006) – In a race that embodied the thrilling action the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is known for at New Hampshire International Speedway, John Blewett III, of Howell, N.J., won the New Hampshire 100, for his second consecutive victory at the 1.058-mile track in Loudon, N.H. The event featured 17 lead changes among seven different drivers and was only slowed by two brief caution periods.

Jerry Marquis finished second, followed by rookie James Civali, points leader Mike Stefanik and Todd Szegedy in fifth place. It was Blewett’s fourth win at New Hampshire and 10th victory of his Whelen Modified Tour career.

Forty-one Modifieds took the green flag for Friday’s 100-lap race, with Stefanik and Eddie Flemke on the front row. Stefanik led the first lap before a wild four-way battle broke out between Szegedy, Ted Christopher, Flemke and Donny Lia.

After exchanging the lead with Szegedy in the early laps, Christopher returned to the front on lap 36 and began to weave his way through lapped traffic, just before the race’s first caution period began on lap 48. The yellow flag was displayed for the first time when Doug Coby’s car picked up a mechanical problem and came to a stop on the frontstretch. As the race leaders pitted, Tony Hirschman emerged as the leader when the race was restarted.

Flemke charged past Hirschman to take the lead on lap 60, only to surrender the lead back to Hirschman on the next lap. In classic Whelen Modified Tour fashion at New Hampshire , where lead changes are frequent and can occur several times on a single lap, Flemke once again gained the lead two laps later – before the race’s second caution period ensued for a multi-car accident in turn four, which collected the cars of Szegedy, Hossfeld and Reggie Ruggiero.

The race was re-started with 34 laps remaining and Flemke battled Stefanik for the lead, with Lia and Christopher also returning to the front of the field.

Stefanik edged ahead of Flemke by a nose on lap 72 to re-gain the lead, but his time at the front was also short-lived as Christopher passed by him with 26 laps remaining.

With 20 laps to go, Christopher was lined up bumper-to-bumper with Jerry Marquis, while Civali and Lia ran behind in the third and fourth positions. Civali jumped into second on lap 85 and put himself in position to grab the lead. Civali charged past Christopher as the cars entered turn one on the 86th circuit, but could not hold on to the top spot as Christopher was back in front on the 87th lap. Civali tried the same move, in the same location with nine laps remaining, but slid too far up the track and gave up the second position to Blewett, who took the lead for himself – and for good – with just eight laps to go.

In the race for the 2006 Whelen Modified Tour championship, Stefanik gained a few points on his lead over Christopher and now leads the standings by 104 points (1,992-1,888) with three events remaining. The Whelen Modified Tour returns to action Sept. 24 at Waterford ( Conn. ) Speedbowl.

Jimmy Blewett Scores Saturday Night Victory at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – It was a wild – and rather long – evening of racing action Saturday night in the Made in America Whelen 300 at Martinsville Speedway. When all was said and done, it was all well worth the wait for race winner Jimmy Blewett who picked up what he said was the biggest victory of his young career.

As a matter of fact, wild might be a rather calm word to describe what took place under the lights at the famed Martinsville short track.

“This was definitely a long night,” Blewett said. “To be able to win at a place like Martinsville Speedway is awesome and it’s the biggest win of my career. I’ve got to hand it to the guys on this team because they gave me a good car as soon as we unloaded. We made all our adjustments at the halfway point and we picked up some positions which made it a little easier. We simply put ourselves in a position to win and that’s what we did.”

Blewett scored the victory when another rain shower hit the Martinsville area just after midnight and the race was called official at that point. Rounding out the top-five behind Blewett were Ted Christopher, James Civali, Todd Szegedy and Doug Colby.

Saturday night’s race was a ‘combination’ event for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour. In the combination format, drivers are credited with an official placement relative to the other drivers in their “home” series.

It was a race that was once again dominated by the Whelen Modified Tour drivers who swept the top eight spots while Tim Brown led the Whelen Southern Modified Tour competitors with his ninth-place finish.

The race was started almost two hours late after a rain shower hit the Martinsville area just before the start of the 50-lap ‘last chance’ race. The event was further delayed just after the start for a wild multi-car wreck coming off the fourth turn involving or slowing a majority of the field as the track was essentially blocked.

The race was placed under a temporary red flag while the cars of potential race winners such as Jamie Tomaino, Tony Hirschman, L.W. Miller, Chuck Hossfield and Junior Miller were taken to the garage.

Mike Stefanik had the race’s most dominant car in the early stages before Blewett nudged him out the way to take the lead.

“I got into Mike and that’s really not the way I wanted to win this race,” Blewett explained. “I know if there was a hole open he would taken advantage of it like I did.”

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour returns to action next Saturday night, Sept. 9 at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C. while the NASCAR Whelen Tour gets back underway next Sunday, Sept. 10 at Thompson International Speedway in Thompson, Conn.

James Civali Grabs First Career Win at Stafford

STAFFORD SPRINGS, Conn. (Aug. 11, 2006)- James Civali of Meriden, Conn. earned his first career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory in the New England Dodge Dealers 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway. Civali and Reggie Ruggiero of Rocky, Hill Conn. waged a torrid battle over the closing laps until Ruggiero spun into the infield with two laps to go. Ruggiero recovered to finish ninth.

Civali, who leads the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings, led on two occasions in the Ramar-Hall/Liberty Limousine Chevrolet for a total of 77 laps. Ruggiero closed in on Civali with 29 laps to go and applied heavy pressure, lap after lap, until he spun.

“When you’re leading you do everything you can to stay ahead, “said Civali. “I was trying to make him use up his tires before he could make a big move on me.”

Ken Barry finished second in the Lombardi Inside-Out Chevrolet after starting 16th. Chris Pasteryak finished third in the John Simlick/Coldwell Banker Chevrolet. Matt Hirschman was fourth in Furnace and Duct Dodge. Barry, Pasteryak and Hirschman all had career best finishes in this race. Ted Christopher Collects Second NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Win of the Season at Riverhead

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (Aug. 5, 2006) -- Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn. earned his second NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory of the 2006 season in the Miller Lite 200 at Riverhead Raceway. Christopher passed Chuck Steuer of Bohemia, N.Y. on lap 65 and held off Chuck Hossfeld of Buffalo, N.Y. over the final 125 laps for the victory.

It was the 25th career win for Christopher and his third at Riverhead. Christopher, driving the Al-Lee Installations Chevrolet, set fast time in qualifying to earn the Bud Pole. He picked the 8th starting position and began working his way to the front at the opening green. By lap 20 he was fifth. He reached the Top-3 on lap 53 and 12 laps later he was in first for good. The victory also moved him to second in the series point standings. Unofficially Christopher trails Mike Stefanik by 43 points.

Hossfeld had his best finish of the season by placing second in the Hill Enterprises Pontiac. Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook Conn. drove from the 18th starting position to finish third in the Reynolds Auto Wrecking Dodge. Series point leader Mike Stefanik needed a provisional starting position in the Diversified Metals Chevrolet but finished fourth to maintain his point lead. Rob Summers or Manchester, Conn. rounded out the Top-5 in the Frasco Fuel/Red Oak Const Pontiac.

Stefanik won the Powerade Power Move of the Race Award. Joe Hartman was the Featherlite Most Improved Driver in the race. Mike Andrews was the Rookie of the Race.
