JOHN BLEWETT BESTS BROTHER JIMMY AT STAFFORD

STAFFORD SPINGS, Conn. (July 4, 2006) - John Blewett of Howell, N.J. passed his brother Jimmy with 15 laps to go in the Connecticut Classic NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Stafford Motor Speedway to earn his first win of the 2006 season.

It was the ninth career win for Blewett and the first since winning at New Hampshire International Speedway in 2003. It was his first win in the Blewett Motorsports Chevrolet. Jimmy Blewett’s second place finish in the T.S Haulers Chevrolet gave the series a 1-2 by brothers for the first time since 2004.

“Jimmy was hugging the bottom of the race track, said John Blewett. “I knew he would do everything he could to hold me off. He raced me clean and I was able to get by him.”
Donny Lia finished third in the Huntington Honda Chevrolet and moved into third in the point standings. Zach Sylvester finished fourth in the TAS Country Homes Chevrolet. Tour point leader Mike Stefanik rounded out the Top-5 in the Diversified Metals Chevrolet. Stefanik leads Tony Hirschman by 11 points.

Jimmy Blewett led the first 69 laps and swapped the lead with James Civali four times before John made the pass for the win. Civali retired with ignition problems while running second on lap 101. Jimmy Blewett and Civali were among a handful of drivers who elected not to pit for fresh tires during the race. John Blewett stopped for fresh rubber under caution on lap 65. He restarted the race in 10th and worked his way back to the front.

Stefanik set fast time in qualifying to earn the Bud Pole Award. Ted Christopher was the Featherlite Most Improved Driver. Matt Hirschman collected the Powerade Power Move of the Race Award. Anthony Sesley was the Sunoco Rookie of the Race.

(April 30, 2006) -- Doug Coby of Milford, Conn. drove to his first career NASCAR Whelen Modified Victory in the Carquest Tech-Net Spring Sizzler before a packed house at Stafford Motor Speedway. Coby led the final 62 laps and held off a late race challenge from Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y.

Coby started the race back in the 29th spot in the Angellino’s Italian Restaurant/ Red Line Oil Pontiac and after pitting on lap 74 under caution worked his way to the front. He was in third position on a lap 139 restart and when the two cars in front of him driven by Zach Sylvester and Tony Hirschman made contact Coby took over the top spot.

“The car was awesome all day,” said Coby. “When Rick Fuller pitted under caution and we were third on that restart I knew we had a chanced to win. It means a lot to me to win here at Stafford.”

Lia, the Bud Pole Award Winner finished .24 seconds behind in the Huntington Honda Chevrolet. Eric Beers of Northampton, Pa. finished third in the Roby’s Propane/Reynolds Auto Chevrolet. Current series point leader Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I was fourth in the Diversified Metals Chevrolet. Rob Summers of Manchester, Conn. rounded out the Top-5 in the Frasco Fuel Pontiac.

Coby also won the Powerade Power Move of the Race Award. Matt Hirschman earned the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award and James Civali was the highest finishing Sunoco Rookie for the second consecutive event.

The Carquest Tech-Net Spring Sizzler was the first series race at Stafford since long time owner Jack Arute, Sr. passed away on April 3rd.

The next event for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is back at Stafford on May 26.

MIKE STEFANIK WINS NASCAR WHELEN MODIFIED 2006 TOUR OPENER

THOMPSON, Conn. (April 9, 2006) – Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I. held off a determined last lap challenge by Chuck Hossfeld of Buffalo N.Y. to win Icebreaker 2006 at Thompson International Speedway. It was the 67th career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory for the six time champion who leads the series in all time victories. It was also the second career Icebreaker win for Stefanik who won this event in 1998.

Stefanik took the lead from Hossfeld on lap 127. Ted Christopher moved to second and applied the pressure before Hossfeld regained second on lap 140. Hossfeld then chased Stefanik to the finish line with the pair both sideways coming off of Turn 4 on the final lap.

“That was a heck of a battle,” said Stefanik. “It’s great to be back in victory lane and it’s a great way to start the season.”

Finishing third behind Stefanik and Hossfeld was Reggie Ruggiero who started 20th. Ruggiero was also in striking distance at the checkered flag making it a three car blanket finish. Ted Christopher came from the 17th position to finish fourth. Defending NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion Tony Hirschman rounded out the Top-5

The next event for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is the Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn. On April 30th.

Jerry Marquis Wins World Series,
Tony Hirschman Clinches His 5th Championship

THOMPSON, Conn. (Oct. 30, 2005) Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook, Conn. drove to his third NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory of the season and Tony Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. clinched his fifth series championship at Thompson International Speedway’s World Series of Auto Racing presented by Whelen Engineering & XTRA/MART 125 lap season ending finale.

Marquis, driving the Reynolds Auto Wrecking Dodge, took the lead from John Blewett, III Howell, N.J. on lap 102 after Blewett spun in Turn-2. Marquis then held off Chuck Hossfeld over the closing laps to secure the victory. Finishing behind Hossfeld, was Doug Coby, Mike Christopher and
Charlie Pasteryak.

Hirschman was credited with 12th place in the Kamco Supply Chevrolet but it was enough to give him his 5th title. He entered the race trailing Ted Christopher by 36 points and needed Christopher to finish eighth or worse to have a chance at the title. Christopher made contact with the Turn-1 wall on lap 10 ending his day and his hopes for his first championship.

“Ted had said he wanted to race more like I did,” said Hirschman. “I took that as a compliment. I just tried to stay consistent tonight. Ted had problems and I didn’t.”

Hirschman now trails Mike Stefanik by one in career NASCAR Whelen Modified Championships. He has won five of the last 11 championships.

Hossfeld’s second place finish was good enough to give him third in the season standings. Marquis finished fourth in the final rundown and Eric Beers of Northampton, Pa. rounded out the Top-5 in the standings.
