Jerry Marquis Wins World Series,
Tony Hirschman Clinches His 5th Championship

THOMPSON, Conn. (Oct. 30, 2005) Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook, Conn. drove to his third NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory of the season and Tony Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. clinched his fifth series championship at Thompson International Speedway’s World Series of Auto Racing presented by Whelen Engineering & XTRA/MART 125 lap season ending finale.

Marquis, driving the Reynolds Auto Wrecking Dodge, took the lead from John Blewett, III Howell, N.J. on lap 102 after Blewett spun in Turn-2. Marquis then held off Chuck Hossfeld over the closing laps to secure the victory. Finishing behind Hossfeld, was Doug Coby, Mike Christopher and
Charlie Pasteryak.

Hirschman was credited with 12th place in the Kamco Supply Chevrolet but it was enough to give him his 5th title. He entered the race trailing Ted Christopher by 36 points and needed Christopher to finish eighth or worse to have a chance at the title. Christopher made contact with the Turn-1 wall on lap 10 ending his day and his hopes for his first championship.

“Ted had said he wanted to race more like I did,” said Hirschman. “I took that as a compliment. I just tried to stay consistent tonight. Ted had problems and I didn’t.”

Hirschman now trails Mike Stefanik by one in career NASCAR Whelen Modified Championships. He has won five of the last 11 championships.

Hossfeld’s second place finish was good enough to give him third in the season standings. Marquis finished fourth in the final rundown and Eric Beers of Northampton, Pa. rounded out the Top-5 in the standings.

Following the race, Christopher was in awe to match McLaughlin’s longstanding achievement.

“I always enjoyed watching Mike McLaughlin,” Christopher said. “He was definitely a hero of mine. I loved watching him race Modifieds and  everything. To reach the same feat as he did is definitely an accomplishment for me.”

Christopher began the race in the first position, as the starting lineup was set by car owner points after Bud Pole qualifying was rained out Thursday. Hirschman started on the outside of the front row but quickly lost the second position to Eric Beers on the first lap.

Stefanik had raced his way forward from the ninth starting position and was challenging Christopher for the lead on the 10th lap. Stefanik slipped back one position, to third, as Doug Coby made a run towards the front just two laps later. Coby and Christopher exchanged the lead on the 13th and 15th laps, before Stefanik took a turn at the front from laps 17-25. Stefanik, a
six-time Whelen Modified Tour champion, yielded to Christopher, who returned to the
lead as Coby continued to battle for the second position.

On the 32nd circuit, Coby returned to the lead by passing Christopher in turn one, before yielding once again to Stefanik on lap 42. Just before the halfway point of the race, another caution period slowed the field and the race leaders went to pit road for fresh tires. Eddie Flemke and Charlie Pasteryak had the fastest pit stops and race off pit road. Ewanitsko, who started in the 38th position in his return to Modified Tour competition after a more than a year absence, elected not to pit during the caution period and inherited the race lead.

With Flemke on fresher tires, he soon stole the lead from Ewanitsko, just as the field was brought under caution on lap 59. Christopher and Ewanitsko then jumped past Flemke to claim the first and second positions, just before the event’s sixth yellow flag was display for a two-car incident in turn one.

With 25 laps remaining, Christopher paced the field as Stefanik, Ewanitsko and Flemke kept the pressure on. With 15 laps remaining, Stefanik passed Christopher for the lead, only to be re-passed by Christopher on the following lap as the veteran drivers battled for victory. The Whelen Modified Tour returns to action Oct. 2 at Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, CT.

“The car was very loose in the beginning of the race,” said Christopher. “The crew worked on it during the race. Any time you finish of Tony you’ve had a good day.”

Eddie Flemke of Southington, Conn. finished third after starting 19th. Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook, Conn., who led for 84 laps, was fourth. Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I. went from 9th to fifth in the final two laps to round out the Top-5.

The complexion of the race changed after a late race caution on lap 295. With Christopher leading Doug Coby was running second and Donny Lia third. Lia made contact with Coby under caution ending Coby’s race. Lia was given the black flag and placed 20th in the final rundown. On the final restart Hirschman passed Flemke for the runner-up position.

Hirschman led the most laps of the event to earn the Tommy Baldwin Memorial Award. He also set fast time in qualifying to win the Bud Pole Award. Flemke was the Featherlite Most Improved Award. Tyler Haydt earned the Powerade Power Move of the race.

The next event for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is at New Hampshire International Speedway on Friday Sept. 16.

CHRISTOPHER WINS MADE IN AMERICA WHELEN 300 AT MARTINSVILLE SPEEDWAY

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (Sept. 3, 2005) – Ted Christopher won the Made in America Whelen 300 at Martinsville Speedway, the first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event held at the track since 2002 – and the first night race held at the historic .526-mile track. Mike Stefanik finished second, followed by John Blewett III, Eric Beers and Doug Coby in fifth place.

Despite the magnitude of the win, Christopher remained focused on the season championship picture.

“This means a lot,” said Christopher, who collected $9,750 for the win along with Martinsville Speedway’s traditional Ridgeway Grandfather Clock winner’s trophy. “We’ve had a pretty rough run in the middle of the summer, with tire problems and other things and we had lost a bunch of points. Tonight we gained maximum points. If we can keep doing that and finishing well … at the races we’re coming up to, our car is really, really great. The races that are coming up are ones that I’m really looking forward to.”

It was Christopher’s first win at Martinsville Speedway and the 21st victory of his Modified Tour career. Christopher entered the race trailing Tony Hirschman by 13 points. With Hirschman’s seventh-place finish, Christopher re-gained the championship points lead by a 21-point margin.
The Tour’s next stop is the Sept. 11 Thompson Sunoco 300 at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway, followed by the Sylvania 100 presented by Lowe’s on Friday, Sept. 16 at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H.

Christopher, of Plainville, Conn., started on the pole after qualifying seventh and scoring the front-row starting position via the Tour’s re-draw of the top eight qualifiers. Christopher battled New York’s Chuck Hossfeld during the opening laps while Beers and Eddie Flemke chased the leaders.

Christopher continued to set the pace over the 43-car field until lap 125, when the race was halted for a mandatory halfway break. After the break, Christopher returned to the lead followed by Hossfeld and Rick Fuller, who had advanced from the 11th starting position to third during the first half of the race.

Pit strategy became a factor during a caution period from laps 138-145. The race leaders headed down pit road for a fresh set of tires – which teams were not permitted to change during the halfway break. Hossfeld, however, made a bold decision to remain on the track and inherited the lead. By lap 157, Hossfeld’s strategy to forgo fresh tires was coming up short, as Stefanik and Jay Hedgecock – who had pitted for fresh tires before the mandatory halfway break – passed Hossfeld and took over the first and second positions.

Following another restart, Christopher was soon back in the hunt. The former NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national champion had returned to the top five by lap 175, just as Hedgecock drifted back and Hossfeld ran in the second position behind Stefanik. Hossfeld spun on lap 203, placing Blewett in the top three behind Stefanik and Christopher. Christopher then charged past Stefanik on a restart with 25 laps remaining and seized the lead for the final time.

The 250-lap event, which was preceded by a 50-lap “last chance” qualifying race won by Connecticut’s Reggie Ruggiero, was the 30th Whelen Modified Tour race held at Martinsville since 1985. The race lived up to its billing as a “can’t miss” event for Modified fans – it was attended by the largest stand-alone (non-NASCAR NEXTEL Cup) crowd in the track’s history. The race is tentatively scheduled to be televised by SPEED Channel in December.

WATERFORD, Conn. (Aug. 26, 2005) Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook, Conn. passed Doug Coby of Milford, Conn. on lap 84 of the Big Y World Class Markets 150 and went on to score his second NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory of the season. Marquis took the lead for the first time on lap 21, lost it to Coby on lap 67 and regained the lead 17 laps later. “Anytime you lose the lead and get it back, it’s a good night,” said Marquis. “I was very loose on cold tires but once I had a few laps on the tires the car was really good.” It was the 18th career for Marquis the 2000 series champion. His last victory for car owner Bob Garbarino and the Reynolds Auto Wrecking Dodge race team occurred at Beech Ridge Speedway in Scarborough, Me on July 23. (photo by Sheila Somers)

The victory at Waterford moved Marquis to within 86 points of leader Tony Hirschman. Hirschman was involved in a lap 65 multi-car pileup. He eventually returned to the race but finished 21st.
Coby, driving the Mansfield Paper Pontiac, chased Marquis to the finish trailing by just .31 seconds at the checkered. Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y., winner at Waterford in June, finished third. Eddie Flemke of Southington, Conn. finished fourth after starting 11th. Tyler Haydt, who leads the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings, scored his first Top-5 finish by placing fifth.

Ted Christopher closed to within 13 points (1976-1963) of Hirschman with a sixth place finish. Chuck Hossfeld remains third in the standings 81 points behind Hirschman.

The next event for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is the Whelen Made in America 300 at Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Va. on Sept 3.

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (Aug. 6, 2005) Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y. led the final 162 laps of the Riverhead 200 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Riverhead Raceway to record his second win of the season. It was the third career victory for Lia at Riverhead and his fourth series win overall. He was the defending champion of this event.

“We’ve struggled the last couple races,” said Lia. “But it always seems we can turn things around when we race here at Riverhead. The team needed the win tonight. Hopefully the momentum will carry over to the next race.”

Lia led the most laps of the race in his Huntington Honda Chevrolet and earned the Tommy Baldwin Memorial Award. He was pressured through most of the event by defending series champion Tony Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. who finished just .37 seconds behind
Hirschman’s runner-up placement was his fifth consecutive Top-5 finish in the Kamco Supply Chevrolet. He sits second in the standings and now  trails leader Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn. by just 24 points. Christopher finished 10th.

Jerry Marquis finished third in the Reynolds Auto Wrecking Dodge to earn his third consecutive Top-3 finish. Marquis is fourth in the standings, 141 points behind Christopher, and just one marker head of Lia. Chuck Hossfeld of Buffalo, N.Y. finished fourth in the Creative Racing
Products Ford. Hossfeld, currently third in the championship battle, closed to 54 points behind Christopher. Last week’s winner Eric Beers rounded out the Top-5 in the Roby’s Propane/Reynolds Auto Chevrolet.

John Blewett, III set fast time in qualifying to earn the Bud Pole. The Top-6 qualifiers drew for their starting position. Blewett picked the sixth starting position. Lia drew the pole and was joined on the front row by John Fortin.

At the opening green Fortin jumped out front and led the first 38 laps. His chance at victory ended on lap 39 restart when he broke the transmission. Lia took over the top spot and never relinquished the lead.

The next event for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is at Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Conn. on Aug.12.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 2, 2005) -- The 2005 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season get the “crossed flags” signal this weekend at Riverhead Raceway in Riverhead, N. Y. on Saturday Aug 5. The Riverhead 200 will be the 10th race of the 19 race schedule for NASCAR’s oldest open wheeled touring series.

Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn. leads the series point standings by just 60 points over defending series champion Tony Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. Christopher has won four of the nine events in 2005 including the series first visit of the year to Riverhead in June.
“I’m glad to be leading the point chase now,” said Christopher. “But it’s the end of the season that counts. I hope to be in the same position in October.”

Christopher believes Riverhead can be a key element to a championship season.
“I’ve always believed doing well at Riverhead is important if you want to win the championship,” explains Christopher. “We’ve had some success at Riverhead and I want to continue that. It’s very easy to have a bad night, it’s a tough place.”

Hirschman has won twice in 2005, the only other driver with multiple victories. The four time series champion started the season with an 11th place finish and has worked his way up to second in the standings.

Chuck Hossfeld of Buffalo N.Y. sits third in the standings. Hossfeld is just 84 points behind Christopher.

Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook Conn. is fourth 172 markers behind Christopher. Donny Lia rounds out the standings just 16 points behind Marquis. Both drivers have scored one victory in 2005.
The Riverhead 200 is scheduled to get the green at 8:30 p.m.

RIVERHEAD 200 NOTES

- Bud Pole Qualifying is scheduled for 5:45 on August 6. The fastest 23 cars will earn a starting position.

- Five provisional starting positions (Two based on 2005 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owner points, two on driver points and one past champion) will bring the starting field to 28 cars.

- The Riverhead 200 is scheduled to start at approximately 8:30 p.m. Posted Awards are $71,345

- The qualifying record at Riverhead is 11.562 secondsØ (77.949 mph) set by Chuck Steuer on 6/10/00.

- The Riverhead 200 is the first of two series appearances for the Whelen Modified Tour at Riverhead in 2005. Ted Christopher was the winner in June.

SEEKONK, Mass. (July 30, 2005) --Eric Beers of Northampton, Pa. drove to the first career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory of his career in the Whelen Modified Tour 150 at Seekonk Speedway. Beers passed current series point leader Ted Christopher of Plainville Conn. on lap 31 and held of challenges first from Christopher and then eventual runner-up John Blewett, III over the final 30 laps.

“It’s an awesome feeling to get your first win,” said Beers. “I knew I had to get Ted in the early part of the race. He raced me clean and I was able to get by. I knew John would be tough at the end but I had a great car all race so I was able to hold him off.”

Beers completed a clean sweep for the evening as he set fast time in qualifying to earn the Bud Pole Award. He led the most laps of the race in the Roby’s Propane/Reynolds Auto Wrecking Chevrolet to claim the Tommy Baldwin Memorial Award. He now sits eighth in the point standings despite missing the second race of the season while recovering from injuries suffered at the series opener.

Blewett’s second place finish in the G. Lopes Construction Dodge was his best of the season. Jerry Marquis, winner of the last NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race, finished third in the Reynolds Auto Wrecking Dodge.

Defending series champion Tony Hirschman finished fourth in the Kamco Supply Chevrolet and pulled within 60 points of leader Christopher. Christopher finished 17th Doug Coby rounded out the Top-5 in the Mansfield Paper Pontiac with his second Top-5 finish in the last three races.
The Top-10 qualifiers drew for starting position. Dave Berghman picked the pole and was joined on the front row by Ted Christopher. Beers drew the sixth starting position.

At the drop of the green Christopher jumped to the lead. Beers wasted little time moving to the front. By lap 12 he was third and one lap later he passed Bergman for second. After shadowing Christopher he made the pass for the win on lap 31.

Scarborough, Me. (July 23, 2005)– Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook, Conn. collected his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory of the season in the New England Dodge Dealers 150 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway.

Marquis, driving the Reynolds Auto Wrecking Dodge, passed Nevin George of Kunkletown, Pa. on lap 8 and then held off challenges from defending NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion Tony Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. over the second half of the race.

“I was really just holding on at the end,” said Marquis. “Tony had a strong car but we had enough for the win.”

It was the first series win for Marquis, the 2000 series champion, at Beech Ridge and the 17th of his career. He now sits alone in 8th on the all time series win list. Marquis led the most laps and earned the Tommy Baldwin Memorial Award.

Hirschman’s second place finish in the Kamco Supply Chevrolet moved him into second in the series standings. He trails leader Ted Christopher by 108 points. Hirschman also set fast time in qualifying to win the Bud Pole Award for the third time this season.

Eric Beers earned his second consecutive Top-3 finish in the Roby’s Propane Reynolds Auto Chevrolet. Steve Whitt scored his second consecutive Top-5 finish by placing fourth in the Greenfield Dodge Dodge. Ted  Christopher rounded out the Top-5 in the Mystique Motorsports Chevrolet.

The next scheduled event for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is at Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, Mass. on July 30.

LOUDON, N.H.  (July 15, 2005)   Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn. continued his mastery of the New Hampshire International Speedway by winning the New England 100 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at New Hampshire International Speedway. Christopher edged Tony Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. by just .017 seconds after a furious late race battle between Christopher, Hirschman, Eric Beers and Doug Coby.

It was the third straight series win for Christopher at NHIS, fourth of the season and 20th of his career victory placing him in a tie for 6th on the all time series win list with Rick Fuller.

Christopher led the first 26 laps, then surrendered the lead to Fuller on a restart. After a pit stop on lap 48 for tires during a caution period, he worked his way back through the field. By lap 78 he had reached the Top-3 and with just four laps to go he powered by Coby for the lead with some drafting help from Hirschman. Christopher led the final four laps and survived the last lap challenge by Hirschman.

"This was a lot tougher than last September when we won here," said Christopher. "The car was loose but I found an area on the track that worked pretty well. Tony Hirschman helped me get by Doug Coby and I have to thank himfor that."

Christopher continues to lead the series standings now by 61 over Chuck Hossfeld. He led the most laps to earn the Tommy Baldwin Memorial Award and was the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award winner.

Finishing behind Hirschman in third was Eric Beers of Northampton, Pa. Coby, of Milford, Conn., wound up fourth and Steve Whitt of Farmingdale, N.J. rounded out the Top-5.

The next event for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Me. on July 23.
