TONY HIRSCHMAN HONORED AS 2004 NASCAR
FEATHERLITE MODIFIED SERIES CHAMPION
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (Dec. 18, 2004) – Tony Hirschman, of Northampton, Pa. was honored as the 2004 NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series Champion on Saturday night at the exotic Mohegan Sun Resort. Over 500 people attended the awards ceremony to honor Hirschman and the entire Kamco Supply Chevrolet race team.
Hirschman’s title was the fourth of his career. He won championships in 1995, 1996 and 1999. It was his first championship with the Kamco Supply race team. He was presented the championship trophy from Bill Cotrofeld, representing series sponsor Featherlite. Don Hawk, Director of NASCAR Regional Racing Development, presented Hirschman with the NASCAR Championship Ring.
Tom and Bob Kehley of Brooklyn, N.Y. received the car owner championship trophy for the first time. Matt Hirschman and Fran Gaspar were honored as champion Co-Crew Chiefs.
“Winning this championship for the fourth time means a great deal to me,” said Hirschman. “I’m glad I was able to help my car owners get their first championship.”
Several special awards were also presented during Saturday night’s activities. The coveted Most Popular Driver Award was presented to the Tom Baldwin, Jr. who accepted the award on behalf of his father, the late Tom Baldwin, Sr. It was the first time this prestigious award was given posthumously.
Veteran car owners Art Barry and Bob Garbarino were each presented the Dedication to NASCAR Award for their long time support of the series.
Tom Sylvester, from Lebanon, Conn., was presented the series Sportsmanship Award. Sylvester, who fields cars driven by his son Zach, lent a helping hand to numerous competitors during the season.
Ken Barry was honored as the Featherlite Modified Series Rookie of the Year. Barry finished 9th in the standings during his first full season.
Jamie Tomaino, the 1990 series champion, received $5,000 from Powerade, as the Power Move of the Race Season Champion.
Donny Lia, the 2003 Rookie of the Year, was honored as the Bud Pole Award Champion of 2004. Doug Coby was the recipient of the Most Improved Driver Award as he finished 12th in the standings during the 2004 season.
The 2004 season marks the final year for series sponsor Featherlite Manufacturing after 11 successful seasons. In 2005, Whelen Engineering will sponsor NASCAR’s only open wheeled touring series. The new logo for the Whelen Modified Tour was unveiled during the evening, along with a sneak preview of the 2005 schedule. The official schedule will be released in the future
