“The Reg” A legend…
Racers all have their
beginnings; they got their start somewhere. For legendary Modified race
driver Reggie Ruggiero it was a little quarter mile track named
Plainville Stadium in Connecticut. Just a local kid racing weekends at
a local track, piloting his way to the top at those Saturday night race
contests in the 70’s. He raced his own coupe bodied #59 to his first
victory by 1970. Reggie eventually raced other cars stacking up 14
victories at Plainville in one season.
Reggie is the all time
winningest driver at the former Riverside Park Speedway Massachusetts
with 93 victories and three track Championships 1979, 1984 and 1988. He
also claimed track Championships at Monadnock Speedway New Hampshire in
1978 and 1988 and Stafford Motor Speedway Connecticut in 1983. How
great is that… One of his biggest victories came when he was behind the
wheel of Fiore’s #44 in the 1988 Race of Champions on Pocono’s three
quarter mile track.
The wins, the titles
don’t stop there. Reggie is the second all-time winningest driver on
the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series. His 42 wins were at 14
different tracks. Reggie was awarded “Most Popular Driver” in the
Featherlite Series 1988,1989 and 1999. In 1998 Reggie formed his own
team. Iguana Motorsports with partner Tony Moffo and claimed the New
Hampshire International Speedway track Championship that year. Reggie
and Ed Flemke Jr formed Raceworks Inc. and have seen their creations
claim victory on the Featherlite Modified Series.
“The Reg”
continues to race off and on with a win as recent as 2004 at the Lake
Erie track and some good finishes throughout his limited schedule in
2003 and 04. He showed up at Waterford Speedbowl in the 2003 season,
racing a Cadillac Modified. The man is a legend with more racing
knowledge than a whole crowd of “Young Guns”. Our hats off to “The Reg”
